{"id":160,"date":"2012-01-23T22:46:09","date_gmt":"2012-01-24T05:46:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/highdesertdirt.com\/high-desert-gardening\/?p=160"},"modified":"2012-01-29T14:27:33","modified_gmt":"2012-01-29T21:27:33","slug":"next-gardening-club-meeting-2-1-12-at-hoophouse-gardening-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/highdesertdirt.com\/high-desert-gardening\/2012\/01\/23\/next-gardening-club-meeting-2-1-12-at-hoophouse-gardening-update\/","title":{"rendered":"Next gardening club meeting on 2\/1\/12 at our hoophouse and gardening update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If it&#8217;s cold, we&#8217;ll have the meeting at Robin&#8217;s house again and we&#8217;ll watch some videos.\u00a0 We had a great meeting at her house and garden last week.<\/p>\n<p>Weather permitting, we&#8217;ll plant some pomegranate and fruit tree cuttings.<\/p>\n<p>We are currently harvesting:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>lettuce (forellenschluss, celtic, romaine, lolo biondo, flame &#8230;<\/li>\n<li>sheep&#8217;s sorrel<\/li>\n<li>chard (several kinds)<\/li>\n<li>kale (red russian and blue curled scotch)<\/li>\n<li>mustard (southern curled giant and black)<\/li>\n<li>arugula<\/li>\n<li>wild arugula<\/li>\n<li>Munchener beer radishes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_173\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/highdesertdirt.com\/high-desert-gardening\/files\/2012\/01\/1-24-12-greenhouse-west-berries-lettuce-chard.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-173\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-173\" title=\"1-24-12--greenhouse-west-berries-lettuce-chard\" src=\"http:\/\/highdesertdirt.com\/high-desert-gardening\/files\/2012\/01\/1-24-12-greenhouse-west-berries-lettuce-chard-300x248.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"248\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-173\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">1\/24\/12: radish, catnip, celtic lettuce, various chards, strawberries and the mystery berries<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>We also have lots of winter veggies growing:<!--more--><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cabbage, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, kohlrabi &#8212; various heirlooms.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_183\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/highdesertdirt.com\/high-desert-gardening\/files\/2012\/01\/1-24-12-fertil-root-seelings.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-183\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-183\" title=\"1-24-12--fertil-root-seelings\" src=\"http:\/\/highdesertdirt.com\/high-desert-gardening\/files\/2012\/01\/1-24-12-fertil-root-seelings-300x191.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"191\" srcset=\"https:\/\/highdesertdirt.com\/high-desert-gardening\/files\/2012\/01\/1-24-12-fertil-root-seelings-300x191.jpg 300w, https:\/\/highdesertdirt.com\/high-desert-gardening\/files\/2012\/01\/1-24-12-fertil-root-seelings.jpg 722w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-183\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">1\/24\/12: various root crop seedlings in our new fertil pots and trays.<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We&#8217;re growing hundreds of seedlings: beets, turnips (4 kinds), leek, onions and of course more salad greens and herbs.\u00a0 I wish our fertil pot shipment hadn&#8217;t been delayed by weeks.\u00a0 But the weather has been good, with lows in the 20s in the hoophouse at night.\u00a0 The greenhouse is a few degrees warmer and it rarely freezes.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, it could easily get down to the single digits in February and we can expect hard freezes to the low 20s in March and maybe even April.\u00a0 Last year we were worried about hard freezes until the end of May.<\/p>\n<p>I started 100 berries over the weekend, including lots of hardy kiwi.\u00a0 I&#8217;m determined to get them going.\u00a0 They&#8217;re difficult to germinate, but I got a few seedlings last year. Unfortunately, they died on me.<\/p>\n<p>I won&#8217;t give up because a number of plants took two seasons until we got them going good.\u00a0 The blue hyssop comes to mind and the sage, thyme and oregano.\u00a0 These plants survived the 2010\/11 winter outside in the ground with temps down to 4 F and two other extended cold spells to 9\u00a0 F.<\/p>\n<p>In our adobe addition where it never got below 43 F (not heated) we have about 10 tomato plants from cuttings from last year&#8217;s best plants and they already produce.\u00a0 Not enough to write home about, but it&#8217;s nice to get the occasional &#8220;good&#8221; tomato.\u00a0 Our tomato consumption is way down since we just don&#8217;t\u00a0 care for store bought tomatoes anymore.\u00a0 We&#8217;ll have one here and there, but it&#8217;s just not the real thing.<\/p>\n<p>We dug up some of the peppers and basil in fall and actually got to harvest all kinds of peppers during the winter.\u00a0 This year I&#8217;ll start the seedlings earlier and we&#8217;ll probably have a mini greenhouse in the hoophouse for the warm weather veggies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It&#8217;s very cool to discover plants that I didn&#8217;t even know survived the transplant.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the greenhouse we have several berry plants and I have no idea what they are.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_179\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/highdesertdirt.com\/high-desert-gardening\/files\/2012\/01\/1-24-12-mystery-berry.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-179\" class=\"size-full wp-image-179\" title=\"1-24-12-mystery-berry\" src=\"http:\/\/highdesertdirt.com\/high-desert-gardening\/files\/2012\/01\/1-24-12-mystery-berry.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"287\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-179\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">1\/24\/12: strawberry and ???<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The comfrey also came out of nowhere, along with the wild arugula.\u00a0 Just recently I saw chamomille flowering.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t even know the seedlings last summer had survived the transplant.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No till&#8221; gardening works well for me. I enjoy these surprises.<\/p>\n<p>Several of the potted pomegranates I started from seed last winter started to grow leaves.\u00a0 I was afraid they froze in their little 4&#8243; pots in the hoophouse (lows in the mid teens).\u00a0 Most of the potted palo verde trees in the hoophouse look ok too.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re off to a great start!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If it&#8217;s cold, we&#8217;ll have the meeting at Robin&#8217;s house again and we&#8217;ll watch some videos.\u00a0 We had a great meeting at her house and garden last week.
